Setting up a router with a modem is the foundational step to getting your home or office online. While the process might seem technical, it is straightforward if you follow the correct sequence. This guide walks you through the entire setup, from connecting the hardware to securing your network.
Understanding Your Hardware
Before you begin, it is essential to understand the difference between the modem and the router. The modem connects to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and translates the signal into a format your devices can use. The router creates a local network, allowing multiple devices to share that single internet connection. If your ISP provided a combination unit, you are using a modem-router hybrid.
Physical Connection Setup
Start by powering down all equipment. Connect the coaxial cable or phone line from the wall jack to the modem's corresponding port. Then, take an Ethernet cable and plug one end into the modem's "LAN" port and the other end into the router's "WAN" port, which is usually a different color. Finally, plug both the modem and the router into a power source.

Select the option to check for internet connectivity or run the wizard. If you are using a static IP address provided by your ISP, you will need to enter those details here.
Securing Your Network
Leaving your network open is a significant security risk. Immediately change the default administrator password for the router to prevent unauthorized access. Then, configure the wireless settings. Choose a strong WPA2 or WPA3 encryption for your Wi-Fi password. Give your network a unique SSID name that does not reveal personal information.
Optimizing Placement and Testing
The location of your router significantly impacts signal strength. Place it in a central location, elevated and away from thick walls or metal objects. Avoid placing it near microwaves or cordless phones, as they can cause interference. Once placed, test your connection on various devices to ensure the signal is strong and stable throughout your space.
