Taming a Pteranodon in ARK: Survival Evolved is a pivotal moment for any player seeking to dominate the skies. This majestic flying reptile offers unparalleled mobility for scouting, swift traversal across vast maps, and a tactical advantage in combat. However, securing and mastering this creature requires a specific approach that differs greatly from standard ground-based taming. Success hinges on preparation, timing, and understanding the unique mechanics involved in bringing this ruler of the skies under your control.
Securing Your Target: The Capture Phase
Before you can even consider taming, you must capture a Pteranodon. These creatures spawn high on the cliffs and peaks of the island's mountain biomes, making them difficult to reach without preparation. The primary challenge is closing the distance without alerting the flock and losing your target. Using a flying mount like a Wyvern or another Pteranodon is the most efficient method to match its altitude and maneuverability.
Once in close proximity, you need to incapacitate it. Tranquilizer darts fired from a crossbow are the ideal choice, as they have a high damage-per-second (DPS) rating against flyers and conserve ammunition. Aim for the head for maximum efficiency. Be prepared for a battle of nerves, as a fleeing Pteranodon can quickly lead to a frustrating chase across the map if you run out of projectiles.
Luring and Confinement Strategies
Simply knocking out a wild Pteranodon on a mountain peak is not enough. When it regains consciousness, it will immediately attempt to flee to an unreachable height. To prevent this escape, you must employ a clever trapping method. The most common and effective strategy involves using a large structure, such as a metal box foundation or a custom-built room, placed at the very edge of a cliff.
Lure the downed creature into the structure, and then quickly build an overhead ceiling to trap it. This ensures it cannot fly up and out of your reach, allowing you to safely begin the taming process. Some players also utilize the "Bear Trap" or "Large Bear Trap" strategy, placing a trap on the ground and building a pillar directly beneath the target to physically block its path upward.
The Taming Process: Saddle and Strategy
With your Pteranodon securely confined, the taming process can begin. This creature is a carnivore, meaning its diet consists solely of meat. You will need a substantial supply of high-quality food to expedite the process. The most effective choices are Prime Meat or Raw Prime Meat, as these provide the highest taming effectiveness per unit.
Unlike creatures that can be fed from a trough immediately, you must manually feed the Pteranodon. Get close to its head and press the interact key to feed it directly. Monitoring its torpor (sleep) level is critical; as it drops, you will need to throw another tranquilizer dart to keep it unconscious. Failing to manage this cycle will result in the taming process being reset, forcing you to begin again.
Optimal Saddle Progression
The Pteranodon has a distinct saddle progression that every survivor must follow. You cannot craft a high-tier saddle immediately; you must unlock the technology tree first.
Saddle Tier | Crafting Requirements
1 (Primitive) | 20 Hide, 8 Chitin
2 (Tek) | 180 Polymer, 40 Metal Ingot, 6 Crystal
3 (Tek+) | 480 Cementing Paste, 300 Metal Ingot, 60 Crystal
